The Importance of Regular Dental Hygiene Appointments

Even when you are undergoing restorative or cosmetic treatments, you still need to schedule routine exams and cleanings with Dr. Seal on a regular basis. Your regular hygiene visits ensure that your teeth, gums, and bone tissue are healthy enough to support your restorations. At each dental hygiene appointment, Dr. Seal will screen for various oral health issues as well as perform a thorough cleaning of your teeth and gums.

Dental Exam

During your exam, Dr. Seal will examine your mouth for a variety of oral health problems, including tooth decay and gum disease, by visually inspecting the tissues and gently probing them with a dental instrument. He will then inspect your throat, neck, lymph nodes, lips, and all the soft tissues of your mouth for oral cancer. Next, an evaluation of your occlusion, or bite, will be done to determine if you have any issues with teeth grinding or problems with your jaw joints. He may also take X-rays to detect hidden tooth decay or issues with the jawbone structure.

Dental Cleaning

A thorough cleaning of your teeth and gums ensures the ease of your oral hygiene routine at home. Our hygienist will use an instrument called a scaler to clean tartar from the teeth, both above and below the gum line. We may also clean your teeth with an ultrasonic scaler, which is a device that gently removes plaque and tartar using vibration. We will then floss your teeth, followed by a tooth polishing to create a smooth surface that is inhospitable to plaque and bacteria accumulation. The last step of a cleaning involves educating you on measures you can take at home to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
